Suzanne Goldberg was a graduate student in the Department of Philosophy at UC Berkeley. She was a representative to the Graduate Coordinating Committee and then a member of the Steering Committee and one of three prominent women leaders in FSM. In 1965 she married Mario Savio and the following year they had a son, Stefan, born with developmental problems. The interview was conducted in Ms. Goldberg’s office in Washington, D.C. where she is a practicing psychologist. In the interview she discusses her upbringing and experiences at Brooklyn College and in SNCC;her role as a teaching assistant at Cal;becoming involved in FSM;perspectives on differing political stances with the FSM leadership;sexism within the movement. She offers insight into Mario Savio’s reluctance to be a leader and his commitment to the democratic ethos of FSM. She is not related to Art or Jackie Goldberg.
