Stanley Fish was an assistant professor in the Department of English and just beginning his career as a Milton scholar. This interview was conducted in Dr. Fish’s office at the University of Illinois, Chicago Campus, where he served as Academic Dean at the University of Illinois in Chicago. While sympathetic to some of the claims of the FSM, he discusses in this interview that he was committed to teaching his courses “free from political disruption.” He reflects on events of the FSM and the academic climate in 1964, and traces his evolution as a free speech scholar.
