Description
Tom DeVries was editor of Collegiate Press Service sponsored by the U.S. Student Press Association, which amalgamated news from virtually every collegiate press in the country and was subsidized by the National Student Association –ultimately revealed by Ramparts Magazine to have received funds from the CIA. DeVries came to Berkeley to cover FSM and in this interview posits that West Coast colleges were a backwater of student activism but when “Berkeley checked in, I mean it was revolutionary. There was something short of two dozen other campuses that had similar kinds of activities within a few months. It spread just like that [snaps fingers]." DeVries presents the history of these news organizations and their role in keeping student activism a national discussion. He also reflects on the variety of activism he reported.
