Malcom [Mal] Bernstein was a partner of Robert Treuhaft and Doris Walker whose firm was progressive and known for civil rights and civil liberties defense cases. [Hillary Clinton interned with the office in 1971.] Burnstein discusses his political background, arrest in the Auto Row demonstrations in San Francisco, his early involvement with FSM;his admiration and respect for the student leaders;his leadership in the many legal procedures leading up to and then the trial of the 800 arrested students, which he regrets his lost;his reflections on Judge Rupert Crittendon and his depositing in The Bancoft Library of the letters written by defendents to the judge explaining why they were involved in FSM. Burnstein also discusses his later involvement in Democratic Party politics and his defense of anti-Vietnam War demonstrators.
