Bettye Branan recalls growing up in Oklahoma, moving with her parents to Richmond, CA, where her parents went to work in the Richmond shipyeards. She recounts her own experiences with war work, first as a riveter at Douglas Aircraft in Long Beach and then as a tacker in a plate shop in the Richmond shipyards. She recalls various aspects of the war years, including housing, social life, race relations, brownouts, and rationing.
