John Sununu was born in 1939 and educated as a mechanical engineer. In 1982 he ran for and was elected governor of New Hampshire. Sununu was an early supporter of George H.W. Bush in the 1992 presidential race. When Bush was elected, he named Sununu his chief-of-staff. Sununu served as President Bush’s chief-of-staff through 1991. In this interview, Governor Sununu discusses the 1992 presidential campaign and Bush’s campaign pledge not to raise taxes. The interview focuses on the 1990 budget negotiations in which new federal budget procedures were put into place and which also included a modest tax increase. Sununu also considers President Bush’s fiscal legacy.
