Description

John Weber was the Curator of Education and Public Programs (1993-1996) and the Lenanne and George Roberts Curator of Education and Public Programs (1995-2004) at SFMOMA. Weber was born in Corvallis, Oregon in 1955 and attended Reed College where he studied art history with a focus on European art. He went on to pursue a graduate degree at UC San Diego and then spent six months in Germany in 1983 on a DAAD [Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst] fellowship in 1984. After arriving back in Oregon, Weber secured a curator position at the Portland Art Museum where he remained until 1993 when he was suggested to the museum by Bob Riley. He was hired as the Curator of Education and Public Programs and along with Peter Samis helped promote educational outreach, new technologies and acquired funding for new initiatives. Weber left the museum in 2004 when Skidmore College offered him the opportunity to work for the Francis Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery. In this interview, Weber discusses his childhood in Oregon, interest in photography, education, study of art history, time in Europe, working at the Oregon School of Design, move to SFMOMA in 1993, the museum's education department and mission, new SFMOMA building, exhibits “Points of Departure” and “010101”, working with schools, Koret Visitor Education Center, various works of art and Weber's decision to leave the museum.
