Fred Martin was an painter, arts administrator, and instructor at the Art Department of UC Berkeley. Born in 1927 in San Francisco, he received a Bachelor of Art degree at Berkeley in 1949 and returned a few years later to obtain a Master of Art degree in 1954. In 1958, Martin became the director of exhibitions at the San Francisco Art Institute, where he supported several generations of Bay Area artists. As a painter, Martin’s first solo show was in 1949 at the Contemporary Gallery in Sausalito, CA. Since then, many museums have organized exhibitions on his work, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. In this interview, Martin discusses his undergraduate years as a Decorative Arts major at Berkeley, graduate studies in art, Berkeley’s approach to art training, galleries and their influence on art, the San Francisco Art Institute, and the development of his visual thinking.
