Agnes Bourne was a member of the SFMOMA Board of Trustees from 1984-1985, Chair of the Society for the Encouragement of Contemporary Art from 1984-1985 (Ex Officio Trustee) and a Trustee from 1987 to 1991. She was born in Spokane, Washington but moved to the Bay Area during high school where she created a teen group at the Modern in the Civic Center in 1960. In 1975 she was introduced to SECA and became a member with the encouragement of Austin Conkey. Bourne later became chair of SECA in 1984 and continued her interest and involvement with the SFMOMA until roughly 2000. In this interview, Bourne discusses her upbringing and education, Mills College, introduction to SECA, first experiences at the museum, educating museum membership, Henry Hopkins, Jack Lane, Toi Huang, gifts to the SFMOMA, involvement with the Santa Barbara Museum, counterculture in the 60s, second term as chair of SECA, and the importance of the organization.
