Aaron Betsky was an SFMOMA Curator of Architecture and Design from 1995 to 1999 and the Curator of Architecture, Design, and Digital Projects from 1999 to 2001. He was born in Missoula, Montana in 1958 but grew up in a small town in the Netherlands before returning to the United States to attend Yale University. After graduating with a degree in History, the Arts and Letters, he applied to various art history graduate schools before deciding to attend Yale's architecture school. Betsky went on to teach for a brief period at the University of Cincinnati before leaving to work for Frank Gehry and Hodgetts and Fung Design Associates in Los Angeles. There he was recruited by Jack Lane and began working for the SFMOMA in 1995 as the Curator of Architecture and Design. In this interview, Betsky discusses his family history, college education, first jobs, use of the internet in a museum context, MOMA collections, Zaha Hadid, The Steven Holl project, Jack Lane, SFMOMA's architecture, Gary Garrels, Madeleine Grynsztejn, Jack Lane, Sandy Phillips, curatorial practices, Bay Area design of the 1960s, and various other influential figures.
