Description

Tugboat Bill Oliveri was a teenager when, in the Second World War, he quit school to join the Merchant Marine. For many years he worked in the engine room of ships anchoring in San Francisco Bay. He eventually settled in the Bay Area where he worked on tugboats, which sometimes operated out of the Oakland Army Base. In this interview, Tugboat Bill discusses marine work, including the rise of intermodal shipping—and, also, the episode of Humphrey the Whale.
