Description

Gerald Nordland was the Museum Director of SFMOMA from 1966 to 1972. Nordland had been exposed to the museum prior to his director acquisition when he was part of the debate team at USC. He was hired by George Culler and started to build up the staff, make the museum more professional and transition to a collections based institution. Nordland faced difficulties in getting the board to expand into the national art scene rather than solely catering to local artists. He left SFMOMA in 1972 and went on to work on a Lachaise book and the Franklin Murphy Sculpture Garden. In this interview, Nordland discusses his early SFMOMA experiences, becoming director, expanding staff, issues with the museum, notable exhibitions, Ruth Asawa exhibit in L.A., leaving SFMOMA, layouts of the new building, museum name change, development of American paintings, and his most important acquisitions.
