Helen Fleck was born in Pennsylvania in 1921. In 1941, before the entry of the U.S. into the Second World War, Fleck took a position as a secretary in the War Department in Washington DC. Through the 1950s and 1960s, Fleck was “an officer’s wife” and spent time volunteering for community services on the many bases in which she lived. Upon her husband’s retirement in 1968, Fleck and her husband moved to the Bay Area and soon took a position as community services coordinator at the OAB.
