Neal Benezrea was the Museum Director of SFMOMA from 2002 to the present (2020). Benezra was born and raised in the Bay Area and attended Stanford University where he received both a MA and PhD in history of art. Prior to becoming the director of SFMOMA, Benezra was recruited to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1985 and began working as an international courier and eventually was promoted to curator of contemporary art under Charles Stuckey. Benezra was also part of the Hirshhorn museum and worked with Kathy Halbreich on the Bruce Nauman show. He was hired by SFMOMA in 2002 and began adjusting the balance of collections and special exhibitions inside the museum and hosting various travelling exhibitions. In this interview, Benezra discusses his family history and educational experience at UC Berkeley, Stanford and UC Davis, the Des Moines Art Center, the Art Institute of Chicago, the East Village art scene, Jim Speyer, career at Hirshhorn, the legacy of Jim Demetrion, planning and fundraising for SFMOMA, decentralization of art world, SFMOMA road map, his efforts to restore confidence in the museum, and his vision for the future of the museum.
