Richard Earl Arnason was a Bay Area attorney and judge. Born in Hensel, North Dakota in 1921, Arnason earned degrees in english and business administration from University of North Dakota in 1943 and attended Berkeley Law (formerly known as Boalt Hall) after moving to Oakland. After his admission to the bar in 1945, he practiced law in Antioch, largely representing farmers, until he was appointed municipal judge in 1963. In this interview, Arnason discusses his education, the history of Contra County and California judiciary, practicing law in rural areas, and presiding over People v Angela Davis (1972). This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting politics, law, and human rights.
