Description
Karen Tsujimoto was the Curatorial Assistant (1973-85), Assistant Curator (1975-80), Associate Curator (1980-82) and Curator (1982-85) at SFMOMA. Tsujimoto was first introduced to the museum in 1971 after she graduated college to find a job. She began as an assistant in the administrative office due to her lack of graduate degree at the time. Tsujimoto then moved on to become a curatorial assistant in the art department in 1973 and worked with a small team including the director, Jerry Nordland, Suzanne Foley, the curator of painting and sculpture, and John Humphrey, the curator of photography. As assistant curator, Tsujimoto aimed to learn about the museum, art history, work with living artists, and Californian artists. She left the museum in 1985 and went on to work for the Oakland Museum in 1992. In this interview, Tsujimoto discusses her first visit to SFMOMA, early career, mentors, shows and catalog work, balancing between California and international artists, Rolando Castellón’s M.I.X. Program, Henry Hopkins, unionization effort, curatorial experiences, and work at the Oakland Museum.
