Tony Marioni was a conceptual artist and Curator of Art at the Richmond Art Center from 1968 to 1971. Marioni's first visit to SFMOMA was in 1959 where he participated in a juried exhibition and had one of his drawings accepted. He also was part of the 1965 Art Association Annual where a sculpture of his was highlighted. Marioni was a conceptual artist and his exhibitions included “The Act of Drinking Beer with Friends is the Highest Form of Art" and “Rented by Gerald Nordland” among others. In this interview, Marioni discusses his introduction to SFMOMA, interest in San Francisco’s Beat culture, various memorable exhibitions at the museum, his show on KQED in the 1970s, memoir “Beer, Art and Philosophy”, views on the the mission and management of the museum, importance of the acquisition of a Jackson Pollock for SFMOMA, Marioni’s Society for Independent Artists and SFMOMA's place in the art world.
