Richard Greene was a member of the SFMOMA Board of Trustees from 1995 to the present (2020). Specifically, he was the Secretary/Treasurer (1997-1998), President (1998-2008) and Vice Chair (2008-2013). Greene became involved with the museum in the late 1980s when he met Henry Hopkins, then director of SFMOMA at a dinner party and provided the museum with a Diebenkorn from an estate property. Greene joined the board of trustees in 1996 and later agreed to serve on the executive committee. In this interview, Greene discusses his collection, introduction to SFMOMA, Gerson Bakar, Binnie Quist Gates, Brooks Walker, tax-planning and acquisitions, legal practice, joining the board, service at other non-profits, priorities after moving into the new building, Phyllis Wattis, his favorite museums and board leadership and developing new members.
