Description
Kathan Brown was the founder of Crown Point Press, a fine art print shop specializing in etching. She started Crown Point Press in 1962 as an open studio with a press where artists could come and work there if they already had the knowledge of prints and etchings. During this early period, Brown worked with Richard Diebenkorn and Wayne Thiebaud and later began selling prints to various Bay Area museums in 1977. In 1986, Brown and Crown Point Press moved from Oakland to San Francisco to a shop on Folsom Street, and just a year prior the press had started a New York endeavor to push Crown Point to the forefront. In this interview, Brown discusses the beginnings of Crown Point Press, studies at the Central School of Art in London, attitude of SFMOMA towards works on paper in the 70s, Bay Area conceptual art, Tom Marioni, relationship with the SFMOMA and the Bay Area art community, museum board members and prints, Artform journal, important galleries, and gallery and museum relationships with Japan and China.
