Mike Weiss was a journalist and author known for his book “A Very Good Year: The Journey of a California Wine from Vine to Table.” Raised in New York City, Weiss earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from John Hopkins university and worked as a freelance journalist throughout the 1970s and 1980s before joining the San Francisco Chronicle. While writing for the Chronicle, Weiss developed an idea for an article following the winemaking process at Ferrari-Carano Winery, which later became a long-running series and, in 2005, a full-length book. In this interview, Weiss discusses his early journalism career, support from the Chronicle editors, migrant workers at Ferrari-Carano, and the importance of migrant labor to the wine industry.
