Description

Born in San Franciso in 1923, Howard Thor came from a Scandinavian family of merchant marines. His father, a leader of the International Longshoremen's Union, greatly influenced Thor's decision to enter the merchant marines after the war and later teach at the California Maritime Academy. During the war, Thor was a student at UC Berkeley and worked during the summers in the Richmond shipyards as a shipfitter helper.
