Lane Tanner was a Santa Barbara-based enologist and wine industry consultant who founded L.R. Consultants and Lane Tanner Winery. Born in Kelseyville, California, she graduated with a degree in chemistry from San Jose State University in 1976 and worked with different environmental companies. Following her first job in the wine industry with Konocti Winery, she took on positions as an enologist for several operations in Central California, including Firestone Vineyards in 1980 and Zaca Mesa in 1982. In 1984, she established her own company to supply wine for The Hitching Post, a Santa Barbara County restaurant run by her husband Frank Ostini at the time, and in 1989, she established Lane Tanner Winery. In this interview, Tanner discusses her early career, her experiences at Firestone and other Santa Barbara vineyards, comparisons between Napa Valley and Santa Barbara, and gender in the wine industry.
