Description

Harriette Stewart trained as a nurse and was a member of the team of doctors and nurses that staffed Yard One of the Kaiser Shipyards. She came to the Bay Area from Nebraska, via Los Angeles, in 1941, and stayed and built a life with her husband. Stewart's interview contains a great deal of information about the Kaiser shipyards--labor and safety practices and treatment of injuries--and the early beginnings and growth of Kaiser Permanente Health Plan, especially obstetrics at Kaiser's Macarthur Broadway location. It also contains insights into changing women's roles, mothering and working, housing, and the flow of migrant workers arriving in Richmond.
