Description
Reverend Shumake was born after World War II to parents who had migrated to the Bay Area from Louisiana for wartime work. He was raised in the North Richmond Missionary Baptist Church where he is now an Associate Minister. Reverend Shumake was a leader of the Tent City anti-violence vigil held in Richmond in October of 2006. This was an organic community movement led by the faith community in Richmond to protest and mark the epidemic of violence and homicides occurring among Richmond's predominantly African American youth. This interview highlights how subsequent waves of migration were connected to the primary wartime migration from the South. It also relates Richmond's past to its present, showing the multigenerational sweep of residents experience, and the process of urban transformation.
