Description

The idea to conduct an oral history with Doris Shoong Lee emerged during the process of conducting the oral history interview with her husband and Commerce, Industry, and Labor partner, Theodore B. Lee. While spending time with the Lees’ at their home in Las Vegas, Nevada we discussed the historical importance of her father Joe Shoong as the founder of the National Dollar Stores. While her father has received brief mention in general histories of Chinese America for his remarkable Commerce, Industry, and Labor achievements, there exists little information about the social forces that shaped his life.
