Description

Mildred and Virgil Hooper had been married 64 years at the time of this interview. She was born in Arkansas, and he was from Oklahoma. They met in Texas and migrated to the Bay Area in the early 1940's. He found work in shoe repair and she in doing hair. They are long time, original residents of Parchester Village and have much to say about its development. Their interview offers some insights into the experiences of African Americans in the South during the first part of the 20th century, the pull and experience of migration, and work and housing in the rapidly changing Bay Area during World War II.
