Description

Marcy Darnovsky was interviewed as part of a pilot project on California’s Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative [Proposition 71, November 2004]. As associate director of the Center for Genetics and Society [CGS], Marcy Darnovsky has been an active participant in debates surrounding new human genetic and reproductive technologies. She was an early participant in a group of pro-choice progressives who opposed the initiative and then helped focus public attention on a range of ethical, social, and governance issues raised by its passage. She, and CGS, support stem cell research but call for “appropriate regulation” to address social justice and public interest concerns and to insure safeguards against misuse of the cloning technology in the service of a new eugenics.
