William Young is a chemical engineer and was the chief operating officer at Genentech. Young was hired by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly in the 1960s, where he worked until joining Genentech in 1980. In 1997, he was appointed the COO of the company. He left Genentech in 1990 to become the chairman and CEO of ViroLogic (now Monogram Biosciences). In this interview, Young discusses working at Eli Lilly, his experience at Genentech, including corporate culture, patenting strategy, and the tPA project, and his move to ViroLogic.
