Pauline Oliveros was a composer, accordionist, music instructor, and founding member of the San Francisco Tape Music Center. Born in 1932 in Houston, Texas, she earned a BFA degree in composition from San Francisco State College, where she worked with Robert Erikson. In 1960, Oliveros won the Pacifica Foundation National Prize for her piano sextet. She was a founding member and director of the San Francisco Tape Music Center in the 1960s. In 1967 Oliveros joined the music faculty of UC San Diego, where she remained until 1981. Additionally, she performed worldwide as a soloist and with the Deep Listening Band. In this interview, she discusses her early years in Texas, San Francisco in the 1960s, teaching at UC San Diego, and memorable collaborations.
