Doris Muscatine was a food and wine writer and the author of several books on San Francisco’s culinary and cultural scene. Born in Manhattan in 1926 and raised in Trenton, New Jersey, she earned her bachelor’s degree from Bennington College in 1947 and later moved to California with her husband, a faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley. Inspired by the diverse cuisines and restaurants of California, she published "A Cook’s Tour of San Francisco" in 1964. Her other authorial and editorial works include "A Cook’s Tour of Rome," "Old San Francisco: The Biography of a City," "The University of California/Sotheby Book of California Wine," and numerous articles on the regional food scene. In this interview, Muscatine discusses California foodways during the Gold Rush, the evolution of San Francisco restaurants, fast food and the coffee industry, and her experiences with several prominent culinary figures in the Bay Area.
