Description
Bruce Howard was born in Oakland in 1920 and raised in then-rural Walnut Creek. After attending Stanford University and serving in World War II, he joined the family Commerce, Industry, and Labor, Howard Terminal, now part of the Port of Oakland. While he was still a youth, his future wife, Jeannette Connick, and her family introduced him to the redwoods and to Save-the-Redwoods League. In 1963, he was invited to join the league board. From 1980 to 1995, Howard served as league president. He also served on the boards of the National Audubon Society, the California State Highway Commission, and the Cornell Ornithological Laboratory.
