Description

Heidi Krahling was a chef and restaurant owner who opened numerous eateries in California and the Bay Area. A California native, she was raised in Ventura County and attended university at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo in the late 1970s. After running her own eateries in Bass Lake and San Luis Obispo, Heidi Krahling trained at Tante Marie's Cooking School and went on to cook at Square One. She then became the executive chef of Butler's in Mill Valley, which she established herself, and of Smith Ranch in Marin County, before later opening Insalata’s in San Anselmo in 1996. In this interview, she discusses gender in the California food scene, the financial and administrative aspects of running a restaurant, and her long and varied career in restaurant operations.
