Description
Marie-Louise Ansak was the founder and longtime director of On Lok Senior Health Services in San Francisco, established in 1971. Born in Bern, Switzerland in 1928, she spent much of her young adulthood travelling and working as a nanny and translator throughout Europe, before eventually immigrating to the United States and earning her master’s degree from Smith College. After graduation, Ansak worked with the International Institute and the Chinese Newcomers Center in assisting recent immigrants, and from there, she developed the idea of a senior health center in San Francisco’s Chinatown. Through On Lok and the Dr. Gee Center, named after Dr. William Gee, she provided daily health care, social work services, and long-term housing to the elderly community of San Francisco. In this interview, Ansak discusses immigration, affirmative action, changes in American health care, working with the grant-making foundations, and the growth of On Lok. Ansak was selected to be interviewed for making an outstanding contribution to UC Berkeley; this honor was made possible by a generous endowment from the class of 1931.
