Frank A Johnson was a mechanic and bus maintenance manager at the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit). Johnson was born and raised in Oakland, California and his father worked as a motorman and conductor for the original Key System. Johnson's first job was for the Key System as a cleaner before enlisting in the Navy and serving during WWII. He returned to the Key System in 1947 where he worked on streetcars until the 1960s when the Key System transitioned to AC Transit. He later became a foreman in the 1970s and maintenance superintendent in 1983 where he started a technical service unit. He retired from AC Transit in 1999. In this interview, Johson discusses they original Key System, general manager Al Bingham, changes to hiring practices for mechanics, promotions, role as a shop steward, thoughts on the union, AC Transit's general managers, BART's impact on Bay Area public transit, use of computers in technical services, his management philosophy, sailing, and thoughts on diversity and affirmative action. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District.
