Peter Haas was a businessman and philanthropist who served as President and CEO of Levi Strauss & Co in the 1970s and 1980s. Born in 1918 to one of San Francisco’s premier families, Haas graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1940 and went on to become a Baker Scholar at Harvard Business School. Outside of his work with Strauss & Co., he was involved in numerous grant-making and philanthropic organizations in the Bay Area, including the Rosenberg Foundation, the San Francisco Foundation, and the San Francisco Jewish Community Federation. In 1997, he was named Alumnus of the Year at the University of California, Berkeley, for his continued support and fundraising efforts for the university. In this memoir, Haas discusses his experiences of running the family business with his brother and managing numerous Bay Area foundations.
