Description

Gene Benedetti was a leading figure in the California dairy industry and the founder of Clover Stornetta Farms, an independent dairy processor. Born in 1919 in Sonoma County, he attended Santa Rosa Junior College for several years and graduated from the University of San Francisco. He began his dairy career in 1946 as a field man for the Petaluma Cooperative Creamery, later becoming the company’s general manager. Following the 1975 Petaluma fire that destroyed the California Cooperative plant, Benedetti went on to found his own Clover Stornetta Farms in 1977, later known as Clover Sonoma. In this interview, Benedetti discusses the development and rebranding of Clover Stornetta, the creation of the Clo Cow mascot, environmental concerns and farmland preservation, and overall changes in the dairy industry. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the dairy industry in California.
