Richard Scheller is an adjunct professor in the biochemistry and biophysics department at the University of California, San Francisco and was formerly the director of scientific research at Genentech. Scheller graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1975 and went on to receive his PhD from Caltech in 1980. He conducted postdoctoral work at Columbia University before joining the faculty at Stanford University in 1982, where he remained until moving to Genentech in 2001. In this interview, Scheller discusses his family background and education, his time as a faculty member at Stanford University, and working at Genentech as the company’s director of scientific research.
