David Bruce was a dermatologist and vintner who established the David Bruce Winery in 1961. Born in San Francisco, Bruce graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and went on to earn his medical degree at Stanford Medical School. While working as a dermatologist in Santa Clara, Bruce decided to purchase property in the Santa Cruz Mountains and establish his winery, which rose to fame for its experimental style and its involvement in the 1976 wine tasting competition known as the Judgment of Paris. In this interview, Bruce discusses his background and early introduction to wine, as well as his experiences as a winemaker since the 1960s. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the California wine industry.
