Herbert Boyer is a biochemist and the co-founder of Genentech. He is also a professor emeritus in biochemistry at UC San Francisco. Boyer earned his bachelor’s degree at Saint Vincent College in Pennsylvania in 1958 and his PhD from the University of Pittsburgh in 1963. He did his postdoctoral research at Yale University before taking a faculty position at the University of California, San Francisco in 1966. In 1976, he co-founded the company Genentech. In this interview, Boyer discusses his educational background, his tenure as a faculty member in the biochemistry department at UC San Francisco, recombinant DNA research, founding Genentech, and research projects at the company.
