Martin Rosen was the co-founder of Trust for Public Land (TPL) and a lawyer who worked on land preservation and environmental rights. Rosen was born in Los Angeles to immigrant parents in 1931 and went on to attend the University of Los Angeles (1949-1953) where he became a sociology and anthropology major as a way to continue taking a variety of courses. During his time at UCLA he participated in Project India through the University Religious Conference where he met his future wife. After graduating he attended Berkeley Law (formerly known as Boalt Hall) from 1953 to 1956 and went on to private practice in the 1960s. During his time in private law, he developed an interest in environmental issues like the Marincello case in 1972 which dealt with the preservation of the Marin Headlands. In 1972 he helped found the Trust for Public Land (TPL) which had four initial goals ranging from acquiring land to developing innovations in land protection. During his time with the TPL he worked on generating revenue, responding to the Reagan/Watt challenge, getting appropriations for the Land and Water Conservation Fund and working with state and local government on bond issues. Rosen also dealt with issues of fraud in land transactions, assuring equity in land preservation, creation of the "Green Cities Initiative" and working with Native Americans on land preservation. In this interview Rosen discusses his family's immigrant background, growing up in Los Angeles, private law practice, philosophy goals and ethics of TPL, relationship with Nature Conservancy, other land preservation nonprofit organizations, and environmental justice groups, land preservation programs for urban lands, public lands and land trusts. He also discusses financing land preservation, getting appropriations for the Land and Water Conservation Fund, working with state and local governments on bond issues, TPL restructuring, staff relations, in the late 1980s and reflections on the environmental movement.
