L. Doug Davis was a former vice president and executive winemaster of Sebastiani Vineyards, established in 1904. A longtime Sonoma County resident, he was born in 1928 in Geyserville, California, and studied physical education for several semesters at the University of California, Berkeley. He then began to pursue wine making, working for Italian Swiss Colony from 1950 to 1953 and Gallo Winery from 1953 to 1955. In 1955, he was hired by August Sebastiani to join Sebastiani Vineyards as a wine chemist and witnessed the significant growth of the company, eventually taking on the vice presidency himself. In this interview, Davis discusses his childhood and education, the Sebastiani family and the history of Sebastiani Vineyards, changes in winemaking techniques and technologies, and the future of the industry.
