Sándor Salgo was a violinist, conductor, composer, and Professor Emeritus of Music and Stanford University. Born in 1909 in Budapest, he studied at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music from 1925 to 1928. Salgo's early career was affected by antisemitism then prevalent in Hungary. He received a special visa to America in 1937 and began teaching at the Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey. From 1949 to 1973, Salgo taught and conducted the music and opera programs at Stanford University. In this interview, he discusses early childhood in Hungary, performances with the Roth Quartet, the music department at Stanford University, and the Carmel Beach Festival.
