Description

Edward Carman was a nurseryman, horticulturist, and historian based in the Los Gatos area. He was born in Los Gatos in 1922 and grew up in San Jose and Hayward before returning to Los Gatos with his family post-Great Depression to start Carman's Nursery in 1937. He mentions the impact of WWII on his family's nursery as well as the commerce, industry, and laborers of the area and the development of his and his wife Jean's nursery in 1946. He focuses on the importance and the role of family in his business, the change of business after the war, and corporate versus small scale farming. In 1968 he successfully introduced the New Zealand kiwi vine into his nursery with the help of Trevor Davies. With the kiwi vine came other imports like Rhodohypoxis and Carmen faced difficulty navigating the international market and shipping arrangements. In the mid-1970s Carmen and his wife began traveling around the world where they met Chris Brickwell who provided them with English plant connections. He also discusses Toichi Domoto who was a fellow nurseryman and had a mini-wisteria that he had imported from Japan. Carmen goes into great detail about the various kinds of wisteria and their marketability as well as livability. Carmen had other associations with Victor Reiter and other northern California plantsmen as well as horticultural society affiliations such as the American Rock Garden Society, Western Horticultural Society, California Horticultural Society, and the Saratoga Horticultural Foundation. Carmen in his later life expanded on the history of the Peninsula Chapter, California Association of Nurserymen as a way to present the younger generation with past plants. He was an active participant in the Los Gatos community. In this interview he discusses the aspects of running a thriving nursery, commerce, industry, labor and plant inventory, the importance of horticulture and nursery groups, and the history of the various nurseries in the region. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting California horticulture.
