Laurette Goldberg was a harpsichordist, music instructor at UC Berkeley, and founder of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra. Born in 1932 in Chicago, she received a B.M. from the Chicago Musical College (1953) and an M.A. from UC Berkeley (1955). Goldberg taught music in the Bay Area at many institutions including the San Francisco Conservatory and UC Berkeley for more than 40 years. In 1981, she founded the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, widely considered the first period instrument orchestra in the United States. In this interview, Goldberg discusses her music education, the Music Department at UC Berkeley, memorable peers, and early music in the Bay Area.
