Description

Allen Broussard was a California Supreme Court Associate Justice and Oakland attorney. Born in 1929 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Broussard moved to the Bay Area in 1945 and graduated from Berkeley Law (formerly known as Boalt Hall) in 1953. After several years of practicing law in Oakland, Broussard was appointed as a judge to the Oakland Municipal Court in 1964, the Alameda County Superior Court in 1975, and the California Supreme Court in 1984, returning to his private practice in 1991. In this interview, he discusses student life at UC Berkeley as one of the few Black students, his participation in the NAACP, Oakland Men of Tomorrow and East Bay Democratic Club, his work with the Advisory Committee on Race and Gender in the California Courts, and serving on the board of the Port of Oakland. This interview is part of a group of interviews documenting the University of California’s Black alumni.
