James Williams Wilder was the owner of One Shot Mining Company and the Manhattan Mercury Mine from 1965 to 1981. Wilder was raised in San Francisco and his family was well established in the Tug and Barge Business. After his service in the Army Air Corps in WWII, he began working as a trucking contractor in construction and mining projects before moving into mercury mining in Alameda and San Mateo counties. Wilder bought the Manhattan Mine in Napa County in 1965 where he built a processing plant and established the One Shot Mining Company. In 1978 he went into negotiations with Homestake Mining Company when gold was discovered in 1978 and eventually received approximately five million dollars for half of the royalties on the land. In this interview Wilder discusses his family history, WWII, earth-moving commerce industry and labor post-WWII, mercury mining, building Manhattan Mine processing plant, reprocessing batteries, development of McLaughlin gold mine, donating profits to benefit Lake County, recollections of Knoxville mining district history, and the Manhattan Mine and its legacy.
