Description

Kay Sekimachi is a Bay Area fiber artist. Born in San Francisco in 1926, she studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland from 1946 to 1949, where Sekimachi saw students working on looms and decided to take up weaving herself. In 1956, she attended the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and met Jack Larsen, who commissioned her to design a fabric for his production company. Today, Sekimachi is best known for her three-dimensional woven monofilament hangings as well as her intricate baskets and bowls. Her complex pieces were featured in several major exhibitions of the fiber arts movement, including Wall Hangings at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In this interview, Sekimachi discusses her family background, studies at the California College of Arts and Crafts, learning and teaching weaving techniques, exhibits and shows, and stimulus for innovation.
