Elizabeth Paschal was the former director of the Program Planning Branch of the Social Security Administration and a prominent early member of the Ford Foundation. Born in 1902 in Spring Hill, Kansas, Paschal earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Wellesley College and received a PhD in economics from the University of Wisconsin. She held teaching positions at Marietta College and Eureka College before beginning her governmental career in 1936. She joined the Social Security Administration in 1942 and was active in the Ford Foundation from 1952 until her retirement in 1967. In this interview, Paschal discusses her childhood and education, her early work with the government, her experience in the Bureau of Old Age and Survivors Insurance and the Social Security Administration, the Ford Foundation, and her life after retirement.
