Florence Jurs was an East Bay community leader who founded Oakland Potluck, a food salvage nonprofit, and the Oakland School Volunteers and Resource Program. Born in Cheyenne, Wyoming and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, Jurs attended Stanford University from 1932 to 1935. Jurs went on to settle with her husband in Oakland, where she served on the boards of A Central Place and the East Bay Community Foundation. In addition to her formative work with Oakland Potluck, Jurs was involved in countless other organizations, including the Children’s Hospital of the East Bay, Lincoln Child Center, and The Management Center. In this interview, Jurs discusses Oakland politics, changes in volunteerism, and her extensive career in community service.
