William Duncan Allen was a concert pianist, teacher, and music critic. Born in 1906 in Portland, Oregon, he graduated from Oberlin College in 1928 and studied at the Institute of Musical Art at Julliard. In 1929, Allen taught at Howard University until he returned to obtain his masters at Oberlin in 1935. In 1935, he moved to San Francisco where he served as minister of music at South Berkeley Community Church for twenty-six years. Allen was also active in the San Francisco Boy's Chorus and the Young Musicians' Program at UC Berkeley. In this interview, he discusses his early years in Portland, his studies Oberlin College, his performance at the White House, experiences with segregation, and thoughts about black music and musicians.
